The Eternal Jailer: Bollywood Legend Govardhan Asrani Passes Away at 84

Veteran Bollywood actor-comedian Asrani passed away in Mumbai on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. He died at the Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu at approximately 3 p.m., his manager confirmed. Earlier the same day, he had shared Diwali greetings with his fans, making his departure more poignant.

Asrani was born on January 1, 1941 in Jaipur, into a middle-class Sindhi family. He began his career as a voice artist with All India Radio, later studied at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, and debuted in Hindi cinema in the mid-1960s.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Asrani appeared in over 300 films across genres and languages. He was best known for his iconic role as the jailer in the cult-classic film Sholay (1975), where his humorous line “Hum angrezon ke zamane ke jailor hain” became part of Indian pop culture. His versatility also shone in popular films such as Chupke Chupke, Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and many more across decades.

Despite his fame, Asrani’s final moments were kept low-key in accordance with his wishes. His last rites were held in a private ceremony at the Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai, attended by close family and friends.

Asrani will be fondly remembered for his impeccable comic timing, expressive face, and the joy he brought to audiences. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian comedy, but his legacy will live on through the laughter and memories he gifted to millions.
