From Wheels to Words: Pune’s Scrap Bus Becomes Free Public Library
In a heartwarming and innovative step, PMPML has transformed an old scrap bus into a free public library in Pune, near Fergusson College. The initiative, named “From Waste to Worth” and “Read and Succeed”, aims to revive reading habits among citizens and students.
At the inauguration, BJP MLA Siddharth Shirole donated 250 books spanning education, history, spirituality, and inspiration. He praised the initiative, saying such creative efforts urge the youth to reconnect with reading in the digital age. The bus library also offers free Wi-Fi to enhance readers’ experience.

Authorities say this is only the beginning: after Diwali, more scrap buses will be refurbished into libraries across Pune. Made entirely from scrap materials—no new parts—these buses will be stationed at key city locations to serve book enthusiasts across neighborhoods.
The transformation has already generated excitement among Punekars. With affordable access to books and a cozy reading space, this project combines sustainability, community service, and cultural growth. Readers can visit the bus, borrow books for free, or donate books to help expand the collection.
Pune’s streets now carry not just buses, but stories too—turning wheels into words, and vehicles into vessels of knowledge.
